Calling all UK designers engineers and manufacturers! Just had an e-mail from the IED detailing an opportunity to design the London Olympic and Paralympic torches... Get your creative juices going and good luck!

The Olympic and Paralympic Games wouldn’t be complete without their Flame / Opportunity to create the Olympic and Paralympic Torches for London 2012

Design consultancies, engineering firms and manufacturers are being sought to create the Olympic and Paralympic Torches for London 2012. Product and industrial design, engineering and manufacturing talent are invited by The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG), in partnership with the Design Council, to register their interest in developing these key items of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Interested parties are being asked to register their interest with CompeteFor, the service that enables business to compete for contract opportunities linked to the London 2012 Games and http://www.competefor.com .

Designers should have a track record in creating iconic product or industrial designs, and are needed to deliver a remarkable, memorable and visionary torch design that will help more than 8,000 people carry the Olympic flame across the UK.

Manufacturers and engineers are needed to construct and produce the torches and related accessories that will help 8,000 people carry the Olympic flame across the UK.

From today, LOCOG and the Design Council are encouraging designers to register their interest on the CompeteFor website.

Expressions of interest from engineering firms and manufacturers will be welcomed from Monday 9 August 2010 as details are posted on CompeteFor. The deadline for completion of this first stage of the process is midnight on Sunday 22 August 2010.

A special panel of representatives from LOCOG, the Design Council, Olympic and Paralympic sport, and industry experts will select a shortlist of five designers who will receive a detailed brief and funding to develop their creative vision for the design of the Torches, from which the winning design will be chosen by the panel in October. The panel will also select the engineers and manufacturers to take forward the production of the torches and other accessories. The panel will be looking for a torch design and build that delivers an exciting experience, is simple to use, technically possible and sustainably produced.

The Olympic and Paralympic torches will be unveiled in 2011 as part of the celebrations to mark ‘one year to go’ to the start of each of the Torch Relays.

Interested parties are being urged to seek further information and details of how to apply online at www. competefor.com . The Design Council is also assisting designers in registering their interest with background information and guidance on the process that can be accessed at http://www.designcouncil.org.uk/olympictorch.
